Narrative

Ludolf Hendrik Rolffs was born July 31, 1906 in Sprang Capella the Netherlands. At the age of eight he journied with his parents to the United States. In America he went to work at a very young age to help support his parents.
In January of 1931 Lou was married to Sophia Vos. The Rev. Richard De Jong married them in the parsonage of the Sully Reformed Church. After their marriage they lived in a house that belonged to a Mr. Shipman.
When they were married, Lou was working in the Sully Creamery as a butter maker. They made and wrapped each pound of butter by hand. The job was cold and wet. Soon after their marriage Lou learned that he too had Tuberculosis. Sophia was pregnant with Janice at this time, so Lou journied alone by train to the Betheseda Sanitorium in Denver, Colorado.
When his health permitted the hospital found work for Lou and he worked in the Schroader Trunk Factory while living there. A couple of years later Lou's mother was very ill and he came home to visit her. He saw how thin and sickly Sophia had become, and when he returned to Denver he took Sophia and Janice with him.
Sylvia was born while they lived in Denver, and Janice started school there. Lou never recovered from his Tuberculosis and
in September of 1939 he died. His body was returned home by train and he is buried in his parent's grave plot in the Sully Cemetery. Sophia moved back to Sully and raised her daughters alone until 1942 when she married Guysbert Van Roekel.
Lou and Sophia were married eight years. Five of them were spent living in Denver.
